Jane Elliott's Blue Eye Brown Eye Experiment

Howsit everybody,
I found the Blue Eye Brown Eye Experiment on youtube and have linked it here. You can now watch it by simply clicking on the clips to the left. Unfortunately they are not in order from top to bottom, but the top one is number one and there is only one other episode (number 5) not listed here, but you can find it easily here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXcO0Ah64rM

First time I watched this program was in year 11 at Canberra College in sociology and found it as interesting and disturbing then as I do now. Whether or not you agree with her method she certainly makes stark some thought-provoking issues and demonstrates quiet disturbingly the influence that the social setting or situation can have on cognition.

Enjoy,-*-WP-*-

Hey All,
I haven't actually seen that before, iv heard of the study but watching it definately makes a difference.
Personally, i think it is a good exercise but agree with Jane Elliott that using the experiment with the wrong children or in the wrong circumstances could damage some children.
I would hate to think that i could act like that in a situation, but this dramatic change in behaviour has been through various experiments.

I agree that this is a good experiment, if not possibly unethical now a days. And agree with your damaging comment (see other post). In some ways however I think that the damaging element of this process is its strength. I think what Jane is trying to demonstrate is that true discrimination is not something that can be effectively conceptualised, but instead is something that must be experienced. People can say for example, that they have felt discrimination but the extent of it that comes with traditional racism or modern institutionalised sexism is something that must be experienced to be understood.

I particularly like the way she demonstrates the circular nature of the process. One can't change it because trying to change it proves it. Similarly the way the children's actual academic ability deteriorated when on the bottom meant that they reinforced the stereotype.

Such an interesting experiment!!!

Comments from anyone else? Anyone think this should never have been done? or disagree with her method and think she is a whining loud and horribly rude woman? Anyone want to look her up and get her to come do this to us? (just some ideas)

Hi
That was also the first time i had seen it before and i can't believe that a teacher would conduct an experiment like that especially on 3rd graders! I know she is trying to show a point about discrimination but the way she did it was extremely unethical. But it was interesting to see how quickly the classmates turned on each other once the differences were pointed out.
